GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The fourth-ranked Colorado Mesa baseball team swept a doubleheader on Saturday against the Dixie State Trailblazers at Suplizio Field.
In the opener, Colorado Mesa allowed just five hits and walked just two in a 5-2 win for the Mavericks over Dixie State.
Junior
Reagan Todd started his first game for the Mavericks and allowed just one run on three hits while striking out five in five innings of work. Todd (1-0) gave up his lone run in the first inning but retired the final five batters he faced.
Jake Mielock came in relief and pitched 2.2 innings, allowing just one run on two hits.
Junior
AJ Landis pitched the final inning and a third of perfect baseball to pick up his first career save. Landis got a strikeout in a first and third jam to end the eighth before a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Colorado Mesa got two runs in the second on a RBI single from
Tyler Sandoval and a RBI fielder's choice from
Josh Shapiro for the 2-1 lead.
Redshirt junior
Hunter Douglas delivered the big blow in the bottom of the fifth. Douglas scorched a solo home run to right center field for his first home run as a Maverick.
Colorado Mesa added single runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
In the nightcap,
JR McDermott pitched a complete game shutout in a 1-0 victory for Colorado Mesa.
McDermott allowed one baserunner over the minimum and allowed just two hits, a walk, and struck out seven in his seven innings of work. The junior didn't allow a baserunner to touch second base.
The Mavericks scored the lone run of the game in the third inning on a RBI double by
Garrett Ball that scored
Zach McLeod who reached on a hit by pitch to lead off the inning.
Colorado Mesa improved to 5-2 on the season while the Trailblazers fall to 4-5 on the year.
The two teams will conclude the four game series with a single nine-inning game on Sunday with first pitch slated for noon.
