LA JOLLA, Calif. – A pair of big innings doomed the fourth-ranked Colorado Mesa baseball team on Sunday as they fell to the seventh-ranked UC-San Diego Tritons on 12-3 in the season opening series at Triton Ballpark.
The Mavericks allowed six runs in the third inning and another six runs in the bottom half of the eighth inning and could never recover. They outhit UCSD 11-9 in the game but seven walks and a hit batter allowed eight free baserunners.
Colorado Mesa built a 3-0 lead after two innings of play after a two-run homer to right center off the bat of
Reagan Todd. It was Todd's second home run of the season and third and fourth RBIs.
The Mavericks third run came on a sacrifice fly by
John Ballard that scored
Will Dixon.
JJ Carr finished the game with three hits to lead the Maverick offense.
Chris Ramirez took the loss on the mound. The lefty went three innings and allowed six runs on six hits, walked two and struck out four.
Sophomore
Taylor Dye pitched three innings of effective relief. The Columbine High School product allowed just one hit and struck out one on 33 total pitches.
Colorado Mesa ended up splitting the matchups with the two teams the faced over the weekend and will come home with a 2-2 record.
They will have their home opener against nationally ranked Dixie State on Friday afternoon at 2:30pm at Suplizio Field as a part of Leadoff Weekend.
