Mavericks Continue Hot Start to the Season with win over UCCS

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Senior Damon Dubots led five Mavericks in double figures to give the Colorado Mesa men's basketball team an 89-79 win over the visiting UCCS Mountain Lions on Friday evening in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
 
Dubots finished with a game-high 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting (80 percent) from the floor. The Temecula, Calif. native played over 31 minutes and raised his team best field goal percentage to over 70 percent.
 
Colorado Mesa led by 12, 52-40 at halftime and stretched their lead to 17 at 59-42 less than three minutes into the second half after a made free-throw by Tommy Nuno.
 
Nuno finished just two assists shy of a triple-double as he had 15 points, 11 rebounds, and eight assists in over 35 minutes of action. He added a steal and was 7-for-8 from the charity stripe.
 
The Mountain Lions cut the lead to five points with 9:34 to play in the game after an and one by Daraun Clark to make it 66-61. Just after that, Colorado Mesa went on a 5-0 run to push the lead back to 10.
 
Colorado Mesa grew the lead back to 15 after a three ball by Kolten Peterson to cap a mini 8-0 run.
 
Peterson was 4-of-8 from beyond the arc and finished with 12 points on the night.
 
Brandon Hoffer had 11 points and three assists while Connor Nichols finished with 16 points to round out the Mavericks in double figures.
 
For the game, the Mavericks shot 52.6 percent (30-for-57) from the field including 36.4 percent (8-for-22) from three.
 
Colorado Mesa improved their record to 7-1 on the season and 2-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The 7-1 start is the best since the 2012-13 season.
 
Last season, the Mavericks fell 90-68 to the Mountain Lions in Colorado Springs.
 
The Mavericks will close out the weekend with a game against Colorado School of Mines at 7:30pm in Brownson Arena. The Orediggers defeated Western Colorado 109-60 in Gunnison tonight.
