Mavericks push past Chadron, 70-53

Jaylyn Duran set new career high at 32

Chadron, Neb. – The Mavericks pick up their seventh consecutive victory and improve to 8-1 on the season just before heading into break. Colorado Mesa defeated Chadron State 70-53 Sunday afternoon in the Chicoine Center.  Jaylyn Duran recorded back-to-back 30 point performances in both of the Maverick's win this weekend and has beat her career high three times this season with today's performance being her best at 32 points.

Recap

The Mavericks were the first to score and never gave up their lead. The Maverick's shot 100% from the field to begin the game and made four fields goals that got them out to a 9-0 lead at the 7:46 mark in the first quarter. The Eagles settled into the game and exchanged baskets but the Mavericks continued to shoot well and extended their lead 20-10 after the first ten minutes.

The Mavericks defense let up in the third quarter and the Eagles inched their way back into the game and with 2:04 remaining in the third quarter the Mavericks only led by three, 46-43. The Eagles outscored the Mavericks 18-14 during this ten minute span. This was the only quarter the Mavericks lost to the Eagles. The Mavericks doubled the Eagles scoring in two of the four quarters and tied with them during the second quarter.

To start the fourth quarter the Mavericks went on an 8-0 run that lasted until 3:46 remaining in regulation. During this run Keylsey Siemons drained two 3-pointers and Daniella Turner hit a jumper after Sydni Brandon had stolen the ball. The Mavericks forced 14 turnover throughout the entire game. The Mavericks continued to extend their lead to close out the game and saw their largest lead of the game with under a minute to play. Duran hit a free throw with 29 seconds remaining to put the Mavericks up by 17, 70-53.

Duran went 10-25 from the field and notched a new career high field goal attempts. Turner was very efficient with her playing time hitting 3-5 field goals and collecting six points in only seven minutes of actions. She added one defensive rebounds during this time.

Sydni Brandon filled the stats sheet with five points, seven rebounds, five assists, one block and three steals. She led the Mavericks in rebounds over both games this weekend.

Around the Conference

Colorado Mesa is only one of two teams in the RMAC that has remained undefeated in RMAC play. The Mavericks remain on top of the conference with an 8-1 overall record and 5-0 conference record. Westminster is also 5-0 but have an overall record of 7-2.

Next Games

The Mavericks will resume their 2018-2019 season after the New Years on Jan 4 and 5 when they play South Dakota Mines and Black Hills State, respectively. Both games will take place in Brownson Arena at 5:30 pm
