Mavericks Continue Win Streak in Denver

DENVER, Colo. - The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team (7-1, 4-0) picked up their sixth consecutive win Saturday afternoon against MSU Denver outscoring the Roadrunners 68-63. Jaylyn Duran recorded a career high 30 points and Sydni Brandon was one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. Eight different Mavericks contributed to the offense that put up 68 points.

How it Happened

The Mavericks got out to a 7-3 lead to begin the game with all points coming from Duran. She made three 3-pointers during the first quarter and ended the game with five made 3-pointers. During this quarter the Mavericks outscored the Roadrunners 20-4 and limited them to just one field goal.

Colorado Mesa suffered their worst shooting during the second quarter only making four field goals and shooting 25%. They shot above 40% the other three quarters. Despite this poor shooing the Mavericks found their largest lead of the game when they led 32-12 with 1:24 remaining before halftime. They entered the locker room at halftime with a 32-20 lead.

During the third quarter the Mavericks shot 46.7% from the field and made seven field goals. Despite being outscored 24-20 during this ten minute span the Mavericks remained in the lead 52-44 at the end of three quarters.

During the fourth quarter the Roadrunners tied the game at 59 for the first time the entire game. The Mavericks were outscored 5-13 to reach this tied score of 59 with 3:11 remaining in the game. There were four lead changes during this quarter that all occurred under the 3:11 mark. The game was tied again at 61-61 before Sydni Brandon made back-to-back plays and scored five straight points after being fouled and completing one of two plays at the free-throw line. The Mavericks stole the ball with just under a minute remaining and Duran made three of four free throws to secure a 68-63 victory.

The Mavericks will finish the weekend at Chadron State tomorrow at 3:30 pm.
