GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. –
Tommy Nuno and
Connor Nichols each recorded double-doubles as the Colorado Mesa men's basketball team moved to 5-1 after a 90-66 win over Fisher College on Saturday evening in the Holiday Inn Thanksgiving Classic finale.
Nichols finished with a team-high 26 points on 12-of-17 shooting from the field and grabbed 10 rebounds to complete his second double-double of the season. The senior also handed out five assists and added two steals in nearly 34 minutes on the floor.
Nuno, a transfer from Fresno CC, had his best night in a Maverick uniform against Fisher. The junior scored a season-high 13 points and dished out 12 assists for his first double-double of the season. He hauled in five rebounds and had two steals in nearly 35 minutes of action.
After a see-saw first 16 minutes of the game, the Mavericks moved out to a 10-point lead just before halftime after a bucket by
Damon Dubots to make it 43-33 just before the break.
Colorado Mesa stretched the lead to 27-points with 1:59 to play for their biggest lead of the night. The lead was gained on a three-ball from
Drew Derrieux.
Dubots and
Brandon Hoffer each finished in double figures with 17 and 11 points respectively.
Falcon Brandon Rembert led all scorers in the game with 28 points on 10-of-14 shooting from the field.
The Mavericks will open up Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action next Saturday as they will travel up the road to Gunnison to take on the Western Colorado Mountaineers in Paul Wright Gym.
