LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Colorado Mesa football team racked up 352 yards of rushing in a 52-24 win over New Mexico Highlands in the season finale for both teams. Colorado Mesa finishes the season with a 7-4 overall record and 6-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
The senior duo of
Jonathon Beverly and
Eystin Salum combined to rush for 298 yards on 36 carries and four touchdowns. Beverly rushed for 160 yards and two scores while the quarterback, Salum, gained 138 yards on 16 carries and a pair of scores.
Beverley scored on a 1-yard plunge with 11:08 to play in the second quarter that gave the Mavericks a 14-3 lead.
His second came at the beginning of the second half. With 12:28 to play in the third quarter, Beverly scored on a 23-yard run to give Colorado Mesa the 38-10 advantage.
Salum gave the Mavericks the lead on their first drive of the game. The Denver native scored on a 15-yard scamper with 10:22 remaining in the first quarter.
His second came on a run from six yards out that gave the Mavericks a 21-10 lead with 6:50 to play in the half.
The senior was also 11-for-21 passing for 165 yards with two touchdowns.
Salum hooked up with
Peter Anderson on a 45-yard touchdown pass and a 3-yard touchdown strike.
Anderson finished the game with three catches for 59 yards and the two touchdowns. The three catches give Anderson 67 receptions on the year which gives him the single season record, surpassing the 65 receptions by Drew Bohanan in 2005.
The junior speedster's streak of eight straight games with 100-yards receiving ended in the finale.
The Mavericks limited New Mexico Highlands to 433 yards of total offense including just 81 yards on the ground.
Tom Saager finished the game with a team-high 10 tackles while
Isaiah Scott had an interception, his first of the season.
Defensive back
Antonio Clark had four pass break-ups in the game giving him 20 on the season.
Colorado Mesa finished in fifth place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference standings with a 6-4 mark. Colorado School of Mines and CSU-Pueblo finished in a tie for first place atop the standings.
