No. 11 Mavericks end in a draw against Rangers

Lawan Abary nets late goal to tie the Mavericks with the Ranger 2-2

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – In the second half of the Colorado Mesa University soccer double header the men's soccer team tied with Regis University 2-2 in double overtime. Kevin Del Mazo and Lawan Abary each netted a goal. The Mavericks were not only fighting off the Rangers but the weather as well. Throughout most od the second half Walker Field was showered by rainfall.

 After this weekend the Mavericks remain in second place in the RMAC standings with 20 points. Four points behind Colorado School of Mines. Regis follows in third place with 17 points.

Recap

The Mavericks were first on the board against Regis half way through the first half with a penalty kick netted by Del Mazo. The senior Maverick netted his sixth goal of the season as he easily faked out the Ranger's goal keeper to net the first goal of the game.

Twelve minutes later the Ranger's responded with a goal of their own by Kristian Hooker.

The Mavericks were tied 1-1 to start the second half.

Half way through the second half the Mavericks allowed a second goal to the Rangers. Parker Klein headed this goal to put the Rangers up 2-1.

It looked as though the Mavericks were running out of time until Dan Bricker headed a ball towards the net that Lawan Abary tapped in with his chest. This goal was recorded with only 2:55 remaining on the clock. This was Abary's 11th goal of the season.

Bricker was subbed in five minutes prior to the most important play of the game. This was his third game of the season and first career assist.

In overtime the Mavericks took one shot compared to the Ranger's three. Briley Guarneri record two saves throughout the game one of which was in the first overtime.

Del Mazo and Abary each moved up in the Mavericks career goal record book. Del Mazo is now third in career goals with 19. Abary is now tied for sixth at 11 career goals. Del Mazo has recorded either an assist or a goal in five of the last eight games for the Mavericks. The senior has 18 points on the season.

Next Weekend

The Mavericks will remain at Walker Field for matches against Dixie State and Westminster College. Friday's match against Dixie will take place at 7 p.m. Two days later the Mavericks will battle with Westminster Sunday at 1 p.m.
