Guarneri earns 50th win as Mavericks defeat Dixie 2-1

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The Mavericks defeated Dixie State 2-1 behind two goals from James McGhee. Both goals were assisted by Kevin Del Mazo off of free kicks. With this win Briley Guarneri earned his 50th career win. He now has a career record of 50-10-10 and continues to be the winningest goal keeper in Maverick history.

Recap

The Mavericks and the Trailblazers were both scoreless in the first half. Part of the reason the Maverick defense was able to keep the Trailblazers scoreless was due to senior defender James McGhee who blocked a shot attempt in the 36th minute. Briley Guarneri also contributed one save during the first half to keep the Trailblazers scoreless. He recorded three throughout the entire match.

The Mavericks outshot Dixie six to three during the first half and were able to limit the Trailblazers to only four shots on goal through the entire match.

Although scoreless in the first half it did not take long before the Mavs were able to net a goal in the second half. McGhee the Arizona native netted his fourth goal of the season after receiving a pass from Del Mazo off a free kick. Del Mazo's free kick went about 50 yards before it found the feet of McGhee who put the Mavericks up 1-0.

The Trailblazers tied the game in the 65th minute with a goal by Moises Medina.

During the 80th minute Del Mazo took a corner kick that was just too high for Lawan Abary to head but no more than five minutes later Del Mazo would connect with McGhee for the second time.

This goal was recorded in the 84th minute when Del Mazo took a free kick which again found McGhee who headed the ball backwards and swiftly put one past the Trailblazers goal keeper.  This was McGhee's fifth goal of the season and first game winning goal.

Guarneri secured his 50th win after saving a shot taken by the Trailblazers in the final second of the game.
