GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- The Mavericks suffered their first loss of the 2018 season Sunday afternoon after being defeated by Westminster 2-0. The Maverick's record fell to 9-1-3 and 7-1-2 RMAC. Griffins snapped a thirteen home game winning streak dating back to Sept 15 of 2017 and are the only team to shutout the Mavericks this season.
The Mavericks four seniors were acknowledge prior to the game. The four seniors included Briley Guarneri, James McGhee, Kevin Del Mazo and Matthew Miller. Head coach Todd Padgett started all four seniors for Sunday's match.
Griffins Return the Favor
Earlier this season the Mavericks defeated Westminster 4-2 in Salt Lake City, Utah and gave them their first loss of the season. Westminster returned the favor by giving the Mavericks their first loss of the season.
Guarneri the Gilbert, Ariz. native recorded his 11th start of the season.
The Griffins were quick to get offense rolling when they took two shots and netted one goal in the first ten minutes of action. Kaden Amano recorded his sixth goal of the season.
The Mavericks attempted to even the score by taking five shots but none found the net before the Griffins recorded their second goal. In the 42nd minute the Griffin's Amit Hefer stole the ball and caught Guarneri too far out of the box and was able to put the ball just out of reach and into the back of the net.
Both of the Griffins goals were recorded in the first half.
In the final ten minutes of the game Guarneri recorded his final save of the game coming up with a huge stop to the Griffin's Danny Darelli. Guarneri recorded five saves throughout the game.
The Mavericks utilized their bench this game more than any other. The Mavericks used ten subs throughout the match. In the 76th minute of the game the Mavericks substitute Ken Dizon took a shot that looked to be promising and give the Mavericks hope of a potential overtime but the Griffins goalkeeper Will Desantis intercepted it and recorded his 6th save. He finished the match with eight saves.
Despite the loss on senior day Padgett stated, "Thank you, McGhee, Bri, KD, and Matty! The program and culture you helped create and currently sustain appreciates you, and we very much look forward to having you as our leaders a little bit longer"
The Mavericks have four regular season matches remaining.
Next Weekend
The Mavericks will travel next weekend to Colorado School of Mines and South Dakota Mines. The match against Colorado School of Mines on Oct 19 will be televised by Altitude Sports at 4:05 pm Mountain Time. Following this game the Mavericks will travel to Rapid City, S.D. for a match against the Hardrockers on Oct 21 at 11 am.
