GOLDEN, Colo.- The No. 24 Mavericks traveled to Stermole Stadium Friday afternoon for a top 25 match up against No. 5 Colorado School of Mines. After 110 minutes of action the match ended in a tie 1-1. This was a battle with the two tops teams in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Orediggers and Mavericks own the number one and two spots in the RMAC standings, respectively. Following this match the Mavericks record is now 9-1-4 overall and 7-1-3 in the RMAC.
Recap
Briley Guarneri recorded his twelfth start of the year as goal keeper for the Mavericks. This was his fourth overtime match of the year. He recorded five saves this match tying his season high.
To start the game the Mavericks took four corner kicks in this first five minutes of action. Kevin Del Mazo took all four corner kicks. One of those found Niall Shaffery who attempted to head the ball. His shot resulted too wide. The Mavericks attempted two more shots before the Orediggers netted the first goal of the game.
Lucas King netted this goal after receiving a cross pass from John Haist. Less than three minutes later the Mavericks responded with a goal of their own. Matthew Miller back heel kicked the ball to Shaffery who found the back of the net against the Oredigger's goal keeper Drew Johnson. The Mavericks took three more shots before halftime and Guarneri recorded one save.
The Mavericks entered half time tied 1-1, where the score would remain the same for the next 65 minutes of play.
The Mavericks attempted three shots in the second half to the Orediggers ten. Guarneri recorded three saves in the second half. He came up with a save in the last two minutes of the game that forced the match into its first overtime.
In the first overtime Peter Vandam attempted the Mavericks only shots and Guarneri recorded another save with one minute remaining. This force a second over time. In the second overtime Shaffery and Miller attempted a shot each but none would find the back of the net.
After 110 minutes the Maverick tied 1-1 with the Orediggers. This is the Mavericks fourth tie of the season.
On Sunday
The Mavericks will finish their weekend road trip with a trip to Rapid City, S.D. as they will battle with the Hardrockers of South Dakota School of Mines. The Hardrockers were defeated by Fort Lewis College on Friday night 1-2. The Mavericks and Hardrockers will begin play at 11 am at Sunday morning.
