QUICK RECAP
Colorado Mesa allowed the second most points in program history in a 72-31 setback to #14 Colorado School of Mines. The Orediggers churned up 797 yards of offense in taking back the Nyikos Cup after three straight wins by the Mavericks in the series.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
The Mavericks are playing their second of two back-to-back road trips on the 2018 schedule. They completed the 2-0 road trip earlier in the year after playing Eastern New Mexico on the road and Western State in Gunnison. They will look to split this two-week roadie after dropping the first one last week to Colorado School of Mines.Â
BIG PLAYS
The Maverick offense continues to play for the big play. The receivers are averaging 15.52 yards per catch which is No. 1 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and 15th nationally. All offensive plays the Mavericks have run that have gone for more than 40 yards, have gone for touchdowns. Peter Anderson has had 14 plays go for 20 yards or more this year.
QUARTERBACK PLAY
Colorado Mesa played four quarterbacks in the loss to Colorado School of Mines. Eystin Salum played nearly the entire first half with Rope Ruel taking snaps near the end of the half. Brevinn Tyler took a couple snaps in the third quarter and Aaron Howard took a majority of the second half snaps and had the most success of the quartet. He was 9-for-11 with 147 yards and two touchdowns.Â
STOPPING THE RUN
Colorado Mesa ranks last in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and opposing teams know it. They are allowing over 252 yards of rushing a game but that could all change this weekend when they face a team only averaging a little over 118 yards of rushing a game. The Mavericks will rely heavily on their front four in Mason Newton, Chance Drake, Ricky Hayes, and Pharoah Davis and middle linebacker Tommy Saager to stop the run against the Skyhawks.Â
SPECIAL TEAMS
One of the things Colorado Mesa isnt afraid to do is use their best athletes on special teams this season. Antonio Clark has been returning punts, Pailate Makakona and Peter Anderson have been returning kicks and quarterback Eystin Salum was featured as one of the gunners on the punt coverage team against Mines.
