GRAND JUNCTION, Colo- The Colorado Mesa Mavericks men's soccer battled with Fort Lewis College Thursday night and fell 0-1. The Mavericks and Skyhawks fought for 108 minutes until Fort Lewis ended the match with the lone goal of the game. This is the Mavericks second loss of the season and their record falls to 10-2-4 overall and 8-2-3 in the RMAC.

Colton Shafer the freshmen from Gilbert, Ariz. recorded his first start of the season as a midfielder for the Mavericks. Per usual Briley Guarneri was the Maverick's goalkeeper throughout the entire match.
In the first half Colorado Mesa outshot the Skyhawks 10 to seven and each team took three shots on goal. In an exciting attempt for a goal with 31 minutes remaining in the first half Peter Vandam took a free kick intended for Lawan Abary, but the Skyhawk's Ventura Salcido intercepted the opportunity before Abary could get a shot on goal.
With roughly eight minutes remaining in the first half Vandam aggressive on defense outjumped the Skyhawk's forward and landed on his back due to the a foul committed by the Skyhawks. From this the Maverick's Ethan Anderson was able to take a free kick right outside of the goal box. Anderson stepped up and took a shot that went around the wall of defender but into the hand of the Skyhawk's goalkeeper.
Following this Niall Shaffery attempted a shot that resulted in wide left. This was the final shot of the first half for the Mavericks. The Mavericks and the Skyhawk's entered overtime 0-0.
Shaffery got the offense rolling for the Mavericks with the first shot attempt of the second half. Â
With 16 minutes remaining in the second half the Mavericks were midfield with the Skyhawk's goalie out of the box and in a hurry Kevin Del Mazo and Tristan Widic worked the ball up in attempted to net a goal but the Skyhawk's goalkeeper was able to return to position and stop the play.
Six short minutes later Del Mazo took a free kick with a perfect cross but a FLC defender blocked it away and out of range for a Mavericks to follow up on.
Briley Guarneri came up with a save in the final minutes of the second half that forced the match into overtime. In a desperate attempt to score Tristan Widic launched a shot with one second remaining.
Overtime Recap
In the opening play Matthew Miller attempted a shot but it resulted in being too wide. In the first over time each team took one shot and Guarneri recorded one save.
During the second overtime the Mavericks took one shot attempt by Ken Dizon which was too high for a shot on goal. The Skyhawk's took a shot with 2:24 remaining that looked to be promising but Guarneri recorded his final save of the game and his most impressive as he leaped into the air and tipped the ball away from what could have been a game winning goal.
Two minutes later the Skyawk's Raul Prescador took a corner kick which found the chest of Marshall Metzger in the midst of Maverick defenders that resulted in the game winning goal.
After 108 minutes of actions the Mavericks lost their second game of the season 0-1.
Guarneri recorded ten total saves for his most in a single match this season. Lawan Abary took a team high five shots three of which were on goal.Â

On Saturday
The Mavericks will travel to Alamosa, Colo. for a match against Adams State on Saturday Oct 27 at 11 am. The Grizzlies found their first win of the season Thursday night against CSU-Pueblo and will enter Saturday's match 1-14-2.
