Mavericks Defeat Adams State in Final Match of the Regular Season 3-0

ALAMOSA, Colo.- The Colorado Mesa men's soccer team defeated the Grizzlies 3-0 Saturday morning in their final match of the regular season. Lawan Abary recorded two goals and Ross Elliott netted his first of the season result of a penalty kick. The Mavericks finished the regular season with an 11-2-4 overall record and a 9-2-3 RMAC record. With this RMAC record the Mavs collected 30 conference points and earned themselves a 3rd place finish.

The Mavericks have finished in the top three since Todd Padgett took over the program in 2014. Earning two first place finishes in 2014 and 2016.

Recap

Lawan Abary netted the first goal of the game within the first two minutes of the match starting. Juan Morillon was awarded the assist on Abary's 12th goal of the season. The Mavericks took six more shots during the first half and Briley Guarneri recorded three saves having defended six total shots taken by  Grizzlies.

e Abary's quick offense was again seen in the second half when he netted the Maverick's second goal with in the first minute. Matthew Miller found Abary on the left side of the net when he netted his 13th goal of the season. Five minutes later Abary attempted another shot on goal but this one was saved by the Grizzlies goalkeeper. Abary took a team high six shots and five shots on goal.

In the 77th minute the Mavericks were awarded a penalty kick and Abary would do the honors. The Mavericks have taken seven penalty kicks this season and this is the only one that has not resulted in a goal.

In the final minutes of the game that Mavericks took another penalty kick this time taken by Ross Elliott. The Cheyenne, Wyo. native was easily able to put this one past the Grizzlies goalkeeper and earn his first career goal.

The Mavericks utilized eleven reserves and Derrick Eberling recorded his first career start for the Mavericks.

RMAC Tournament  

The 2018 RMAC Tournament will feature six teams. Quarterfinals are slated for Tuesday, Oct. 30 with the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 2 and finals on Sunday, Nov. 4. Colorado School of Mines will host the semifinals and finals of 2018 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament.

With the Mavericks earning the third seed they will host one of the two matches in the first round on Tuesday Oct 30. MSU-Denver who earned the six seed will travel Grand Junction for the second time this season. In the previous meeting the Mavericks were victorious defeating the roadrunners 1-0. Game time is set for 6pm at Walker Field.
