With seven seconds remaining in regulation,
Trent Clay was at the line for his second of two free throws with the Mavericks down 59-56 to Black Hills State University. After Clay's miss goes off left, the ball bounces around into the hands of
Connor Nichols. From there Nichols is able to swing the ball outside to
Brandon Hoffer, who does what he always does, and finds the open Clay on the perimeter. From there Clay drilled the wide open three pointer with two seconds to go to send the game into overtime against his former team.
Â
In overtime, the Mavericks were able to pull away in the final seconds to pull off the 68-67 upset victory over the Yellowjackets.
Â
It took both teams a little while to get going, as the teams were tied at 3-3 after five minutes of action. The pace in the first half remained slow as both teams would be unable to surpass 30 points in the half. However, the Mavericks found themselves with a three-point lead (26-23) heading into the locker room.
Â
In the second half the action picked up for both teams. The Yellowjackets opened up the half on a 17-5 run to take a nine-point lead. CMU was able to battle their way back into the game to begin trading baskets back and forth down the stretch prior to the final sequence.
Â
Clay finished with a season high 11 points and a season high six assists. Nichols finished with a team high 23 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Hoffer and
Emilio Acedo were the other Mavericks to finish with double figures on the night.
Â
As a team the Mavericks shot a mere 35 percent from the field, but they forced the Yellowjackets to go 9-29 from the three-point line and committed 13 turnovers to the Mavericks six.
Â
On top of the come behind victory, Hoffer finished with six assists which moved him past Brandon Pollard for third all-time in career assists.
Â
The win moves the Mavericks to 9-11 overall on the year and 5-9 in the RMAC. They will look to take this momentum into tomorrow night as they play host to South Dakota School of Mines at 7:30 p.m.
