LUBBOCK, Texas— Senior
Hattie Gianinetti put down a season-high 15 kills on a .448 hitting effort while
MacKenzie Edwards and
Katie Scherr chipped in 13 apiece to lead the Colorado Mesa University volleyball team to a third straight win at this weekend's Lubbock Christian University Chap Classic, Friday here at the Rip Griffin Center. Â The Mavericks hit a solid .254 as a team in the 25-15, 21-25, 25-16, 25-23 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State University and improved to 5-2 on the season.
CMU had claimed a come-from-behind 5-set win over Eastern New Mexico just hours earlier.
The Bulldogs fell to 1-1 on the weekend and 2-4 on the season.
Gianinetti took over the fourth set converting on all nine of her swings in the frame as the Mavericks won seven of the final nine points of the match to rally from a 21-18 deficit.
Edwards, who also put up an impressive 18 digs in her second double-double of the day, triggered that run. Â Scherr, whose 13 kills were just one shy of a career-high, then put one down forcing a Bulldog timeout.
SWOSU would come out to score the next point on a net violation before kills by Scherr and Gianinetti tied the set. Â Junior libero
Taylor Woods then served an ace to give the Mavericks a 23-22 lead before a Bulldog hitting error gave the Mavericks a pair of match points. Â Scherr converted on the second of those.
Things were a bit easier for the Mavericks in the early going as they raced to a 12-7 lead in the opening set. Â They gradually extended that advantage to as many as 10 points. Â They hit .308 in the opening set before cooling to just a .098 clip in the second set, which the Bulldogs took total control of early building a 12-2 lead. Â The Mavericks would climb back to within three but ran out of time.
With the match level, the third set was tight in the early going before four different Mavericks put down kills in a 5-0 stretch that gave the Mavericks an 11-7 lead that they would not relinquish. Â CMU hit .261 in the third.
Not going away quietly, the Bulldogs had the lead in fourth set before the closing stretch gave the Mavericks the overall victory.
Throughout the evening, the Mavericks finished with a big 64-42 edge in kills as
Megan Gianinetti and
Alyssa Chutka both finished with eight kills to aid the cause. Â Sophomore setter
Samantha Ritter ran the attack and dished out 45 assists, just two shy of her career-high. Â She also tallied a career-high 14 digs and put down five kills of her own on an errorless 10 attempts.
Woods led all players with 21 digs and has now had 20 or more in each of the Mavericks' three matches at the tournament.
The Mavericks, who are the only unbeaten squad in the 6-team affair, will wrap up their weekend Saturday at 11 a.m. CDT (10 a.m. Mountain) against Texas Woman's. Â The Mavericks needed just 63 minutes to claim a 3-set victory over the Pioneers last weekend in Golden, Colo.
