Colorado Mesa University was upset on Friday night against Colorado School of Mines. A header in the final minute of regulation gave the Orediggers the 2-1 victory and their first conference victory of the season. The loss ended the Mavericks undefeated streak to begin the season, as well as is their first conference regular season loss in over a year.
Neither team was able to score in the first half, but two quick strikes in the second got the scoring going. CSM struck first with a goal in the 51st minute by John Haist for his 6th of the year. CMU came back one minute later with a goal of their own. This one came from
Benji Delgadillo on a header in the middle of the box off of a corner kick from
Kevin Del Mazo.
Both teams were almost even in the shots category, with the Mavericks having the slight edge 12-11 and 6-5 in shots on goal. Delgadillo led the team with 4 shots on the night.
Briley Guarneri was in net for the Mavericks. He finished the game with 2 goals allowed and 3 saves. This was Guarneri's first loss of the season.
CMU will look to bounce back on Sunday against #18 Regis University. The game time is set for 12:30 p.m. at Walker Field.
