Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Bryce Reedy

Mavericks fall in season opener

Colorado Mesa University falls to Humboldt State in their first game of the season. A goal late in the second half was the difference maker giving the Jacks the 2-1 victory.

"We wanted to get off to a good start for the season," Head coach Jason Clare said. "I just felt that we were a bit too amped up for the game. We had been waiting a long time for the start of the season and I think it took us a little bit longer to get into the game and play how we play."

The Jacks struck first in the opening 10 minutes to give themselves the early 1-0 lead. Amanda Wenzel would score her first goal of the season late in the first half to tie the game up at 1-1 off a pass from Mackenzie King. That would be the score entering half time.

CMU was unable to score again in the second half however, allowing the Jacks to seal their first victory of the season. The Mavericks were out shot in the game 15-9, including 9-5 in shots on goal.

Abby Steers played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Mavericks, coming away with 4 saves.

"I thought Abby did very well," Clare said. "I think the nerves were there for her. We just told her that we believe in her and that she has to believe in herself. She made some great decisions and she made a couple of fantastic saves. […] I am really proud of her and how she stepped into things."

The Mavericks next test will be on Sunday as they play the #22 ranked Sonoma State University. Game time is set for noon mountain time.
