Mavs Claim Second Straight Tournament Championship

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – For the second straight year, the Colorado Mesa men's lacrosse team won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament Championship over Westminster. This year though they did it in convincing fashion with a 20-7 win over the Griffins.
 
Jack Griffin netted the first goal for the Mavericks but Westminster responded with a goal just over two minutes later to knot the match at 1-1 with 11:23 to go in the first period.
 
The biggest momentum shift in the game happened just eight seconds later when Steve Brandenburg netted the first of four goals in the game to give the Mavericks a 2-1 edge and they never surrendered the lead after.
 
The Griffins scored with 4:19 to play in the first quarter to make it 5-2 but then the Mavericks went on a terror.
 
Colorado Mesa scored 10 unanswered goals that spanned the 2:14 mark of the first quarter all the way to the 9:58 mark of the third.
 
The Maverick defense limited Westminster to just 25 shots in the game and forced 20 Griffin turnovers.
 
Michael Marino gave the Mavericks every chance to win the game early, winning 17-of-24 total faceoffs in the game. He was named the tournament's most outstanding player.
 
Jack Griffin scored a hat trick in the game while Jack Griffin and Jake Douglas added two goals apiece.
 
Remi Reeves earned his fourth career tournament win making six saves in over 48 minutes of work.
 
Colorado Mesa moved their season record to 16-2 on the season and now will wait for the NCAA Selection Show that takes place tomorrow (May 7) at 7pm.
