GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – No. 2 Colorado Mesa used a five-run seventh and a three-run eighth to take a 10-3 victory over Quincy in the first round of the NCAA Division II Baseball Championship at AirHogs Stadium.
The Mavericks scored their first runs of the game on an
Andrew Contreras RBI single to right field that scored
Kyle Serrano who reached on an error. Contreras came around to score later, on a
Zach McLeod RBI single to center field to make it 2-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth.
Quincy cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth inning. J.C. DeMuri doubled to right field scoring Jake Walters to make it 2-1 after four.
The Hawks took the lead in the bottom of the seventh on a Nolan Snyder two-run double to make it 3-2 in favor of Quincy.
The lead was short lived.
Colorado Mesa turned around and scored five runs without recording a single hit in the top half of the seventh inning. The Mavs reached on five walks, two errors and swiped three bases in the inning to make it 7-3.
JJ Carr layed down a perfect bunt in the eighth to get the scoring going again.
Kyle Serrano and
Bligh Madris hit back-to-back solo home runs in the inning to make it 10-3. For Serrano, was his 10
th round tripper of the season while Madris hit his 17
th of the year.
Carr and
Andrew Contreras were the lone Mavericks to finish with multiple hits in the game.
Kyle Leahy pitched five and a third innings for the Mavericks and didn't factor into the decision. Leahy allowed three runs on three hits, walked one and struck out seven before giving way to the bullpen.
Tyler Day came in and once again was lights out. Day (6-2) earned the win and scattered four hits while striking out seven.
Colorado Mesa improved their record to 49-10 on the season while Quincy drops to 37-22 on the year.
The Mavericks will play on Tuesday, May 30 at 6pm (MDT) against St. Thomas Aquinas in the bracket two semifinal.
