World Series Bound

Box Score SAN ANGELO, Texas – All week long the Colorado Mesa baseball team relied on its pitching to win games, today's NCAA South Central Region Championship game was no different. The Mavericks defeated Arkansas-Fort Smith 8-1 to claim their third region championship and trip to the NCAA Division II World Series.
 
Leahy (13-0), the tournament most outstanding player, pitched six innings of shutout baseball. He allowed just six hits, and struck out four and threw first pitch strikes to 16 of the 22 batters he faced.
 
The entire Maverick pitching staff allowed a total of five runs in the tournament.
 
Three relievers combined to allow one run on five hits, walked one and struck out three.
 
The Mavericks were relentless on offense, scoring runs in the first four innings.
 
Kyle Serrano doubled home PJ Gonzalez in the first inning followed by a Zach McLeod sac fly and Matt Haggerty followed by reaching on an error to make it 3-0 after two innings.
 
Colorado Mesa added a single run in the third on a RBI single by Tanner Rempel and scored two more in the fourth to make it 6-0 after four innings.
 
McLeod, the All-Tournament shortstop, hit a solo home run to lead off the fourth inning.
 
Tanner Rempel delivered the final blow with a two-run double to make the score 8-1.
 
Serrano finished the game 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI while Rempel went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three runs driven in.
 
Matt Haggerty was named to the All-Tournament team along with Chris Ramirez and Kevan Elcock.
 
The Mavericks head to Grand Prairie with a 48-10 overall record while Arkansas-Fort Smith's season ends with an overall record of 35-22.
 
Colorado Mesa will be making their third appearance in the Division II World Series. They went 1-2 in the 2009 World Series and finished as runner-up in 2014 in Cary, N.C.
 
Colorado Mesa will take on the Midwest Region winner which will either be Quincy or top-seeded Northwood on Sunday at 7:30pm (CDT).
