JR McDermott and
Tyler Day combined to limit No. 19 Lubbock Christian to just three hits in the Mavericks 3-2 win in the second round of the NCAA South Central Regional at Foster Field.
Lubbock Christian took the early lead on a fisted double down the right field by Chase Simmons. The throw in by
Bligh Madris allowed the runner to score and give Lubbock Christian a 1-0 lead.
The Mavericks took the lead in the top of the third on a two-run blast by
PJ Gonzalez. It was Gonzalez' eighth bomb of the season and gave the Mavericks a 3-2 lead that they would not relinquish.
Lubbock Christian cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a Ryan Rogers sacrifice fly to right field to make it 3-2 in favor of Colorado Mesa.
The Chaps had the bases loaded with nobody out in the sixth but McDermott got a strikeout and a sacrifice fly before handing the ball to Day. The senior got a ground ball to a diving
Zach McLeod to end the threat.
McDermott went five and two-thirds and allowed two runs on three hits, walked two and struck out seven. The sophomore improved to 9-1 on the season.
Day retired 10 of the 11 batters he faced including six by way of strikeout in his three and one-third innings to earn his fourth save.
Gonzalez, Carr and
Matt Haggerty all had two hits in the game. Gonzalez finished with two RBIs while Madris finished with one.
Colorado Mesa improved their record to 46-10 on the season while the Chaps fell to 38-15.
The Mavericks will play the winner of Lubbock Christian and Angelo State tomorrow night at 7pm (CDT). Colorado Mesa is the lone undefeated team in the region.
