Box Score SAN ANGELO, Texas – Colorado Mesa opened up the NCAA South Central Region Tournament with a convincing 11-2 win over the fifth-seeded St. Edward's Hilltoppers at Foster Field on the campus of Angelo State University.
The Mavericks opened the scoring in the first inning on a two-run double by
Tanner Rempel, scoring
Kyle Serrano and
JJ Carr.
In the third inning,
JJ Carr singled down the left field line to score
PJ Gonzalez.
Bligh Madris had a RBI fielder's choice to score Carr. Serrano scored later on a double play to extend the Mavericks lead to 5-0.
Bligh Madris hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to extend the Maverick lead to 6-0.
Colorado Mesa opened it up in the sixth scoring four runs on three hits.
Matt Haggerty hit a two-run double to right center followed by a
PJ Gonzalez two-run double to make the score 10-0.
Will Dixon hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh. Dixon was hit by a pitch but was told by the home plate umpire to stay because he did not make an attempt to get out of the way before hitting his home run.
JJ Carr finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs scored and made five assists at the hot corner, twice on diving plays.
Tanner Rempel finished with two hits, both coming as doubles.
Kyle Leahy had another stellar outing. Leahy (12-0) allowed two runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out six in eight innings of work.
Jett Wodiuk pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the win.
Colorado Mesa improves their record to 45-10 on the season while St. Edward's falls to 33-19 on the season and snaps their eight-game winning streak.
The Mavericks will move onto tomorrow night's 7pm game and will take on the winner of West Texas A&M and Lubbock Christian.
