GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – RMAC Pitcher of the Year
Kyle Leahy pitched a complete game to lead Colorado Mesa to an 8-3 win over the Regis Rangers in the first round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament at Suplizio Field.
Leahy (11-0) allowed three runs on seven hits, walked no one and struck out 11 in the nine innings of work. The Boulder native allowed just a pair of singles after the fifth inning and retired the final 11 batters he faced.
The Rangers took the lead in the second inning on a home run by Andrew Bryniarski, his 10
th of the season.
Colorado Mesa answered back with a long ball of their own.
Andrew Contreras launched a no doubter over the wall in right field, his third of the season.
Bligh Madris gave the Mavericks their first lead of the game in the bottom of the third on a RBI single up the middle, scoring
PJ Gonzalez.
Regis took their final lead of the game in the top of the fifth on a two-run home run by Ryan Tierney to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead.
The Mavericks took the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth inning scoring four runs on three hits. Contreras hit an RBI single and
Zach McLeod had a two-run triple to center field.
Lane LaCrone also added an RBI single in the inning.
Colorado Mesa would get two insurance runs in the seventh inning for the 8-3 edge.
McLeod went 3-for-4 with two runs driven in and a run scored while Contreras picked up this postseason where he left off last season with a 2-for-4 performance with two runs scored and two runs driven in.
Colorado Mesa moves their record to 41-10 this season while Regis drops to 25-25.
The Mavericks will play CSU-Pueblo tomorrow at 3:30pm.
