GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa's
JR McDermott pitched eight innings of one-hit ball in a 19-0 route of CSU-Pueblo in the second round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament at Suplizio Field.
McDermott threw 111 pitches in his eight innings and allowed four walks and struck out 12. The sophomore retired five of the first six batters by way of strikeout.
Freshman
Taylor Dye pitched the ninth inning and allowed one walk.
The Mavericks opened the game up by exploding for 12 runs in the bottom half of the inning. They had six hits in the inning including two by
Andrew Contreras and two by
Tanner Rempel.
Rempel finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and five RBIs. All five RBIs came in the first inning on a two-run single and a three-run double.
Contreras finished just a home run short of the cycle. He finished 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and two runs driven in.
Josh Shapiro hit a pinch-hit, two-run home run as part of a five-run eighth inning. The home run was his first of the season.
In all 13 Colorado Mesa batters recorded a hit.
The Mavericks improve to 42-10 on the season while the ThunderWolves drop to 23-26 on the season and are eliminated from the tournament.
Colorado Mesa will play in the semifinals of the tournament at 12pm tomorrow (May 12) at Suplizio Field.
