GRAND JUCNTION, Colo. – The No. 15 Colorado Mesa baseball team earned the weekend sweep of both Colorado Christian and Colorado Mines with a doubleheader sweep on Sunday at Suplizio Field.
In game one, senior
PJ Gonzalez finished with two hits and drove in three to help lead the Mavericks to a 12-10 win over Colorado Christian for their sixth win of the season over the Cougars.
The Las Vegas native hit his fifth home run of the season in the fourth inning, a two-run shot to left field. Later, he hit a RBI double to left field that drove in
Kevan Elcock.
Elcock finished 1-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored, and two runs driven in.
Keenan Eaton also had two hits including his first double of the season.
AJ Landis earned the win pitching five innings and allowing four runs on four hits, walked none and struck out six. Landis (1-1) had a 72 percent strike rate and threw just 20 balls in his start.
The Mavericks ran into a jam late in the game. With Christian threatening in the eighth, lefty
Jett Wodiuk came in and stopped the bleeding to earn his first save of the season.
In the weekend finale,
Jake Mielock pitched seven shutout innings in his second start of the season and helped give Colorado Mesa a 3-0 win over Colorado Mines.
Mielock (1-1) allowed just two hits and walked two while striking out seven in his outing. He retired 16 of the final 17 batters he faced and threw just 87 pitches.
Senior
Tyler Day earned his first save of the season after pitching two perfect innings to close out the game. Day struck out four of the six batters he faced.
Andrew Contreras drove in the game's first run the unconventional way, a bases loaded walk that forced in
JJ Carr in the bottom of the first inning.
Kyle Serrano gave the Mavericks some insurance in the bottom of the seventh. Serrano sent an 0-1 pitch over the mini monster in left field for his seventh home run of the season to give the Mavericks a 3-0 advantage.
Colorado Mesa pushed their win streak to 13 games after the four-game pod sweep of Colorado Christian and Colorado Mines. The Mavericks are now 26-8 on the season and 18-2 in the conference.
The Mavericks will be on the road for the next two weeks. They will take on the conference's second-place team in Regis starting on Friday at 3pm.
