Big Eighth Gives Mavericks Win

DENVER, Colo. – The No. 11 Colorado Mesa baseball team extended its win streak to 14 games after a 10-2 over the Regis Rangers on Thursday afternoon in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference matchup.

The Mavericks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. JJ Carr forced in PJ Gonzalez on what started as a sac bunt with both moving up on an errant throw by the third baseman. Bligh Madris later doubled, driving in Carr.

Colorado Mesa extended its lead in the third inning on an Andrew Contreras RBI single that sneaked past the shortstop, scoring Kyle Serrano.

Regis clawed back scoring one in the fourth and another in the sixth to cut the Maverick lead to 3-2 after six innings.

The Mavericks exploded for five runs in the eighth inning to end any chance of a Ranger comeback. Garrett Ball led the inning off with a solo home run followed by a RBI double by Tanner Nieslanik. Carr finished the inning off with a three-run jack to left field.

Will Dixon added two more runs in the top of the ninth inning on a two-run shot to center field to make it 10-2.

Regis added one in the ninth.

Carr finished the game 2-for-5 with two runs scored and four runs driven in while Dixon went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two driven in.

Madris added three hits for the Mavericks.

Sophomore ace Kyle Leahy got the start and continued to prove why he is one of the top pitchers in the conference. Leahy allowed two runs (none earned) on four hits, walked two and struck out four in seven innings of work, dropping his ERA to 0.90 on the season.

Tyler Day worked a scoreless eighth, striking out two and Eli Thornquist worked the ninth.

Regis entered the series in second place in the RMAC but fell to 24-12 overall and 17-8 in the RMAC while Colorado Mesa improved to 27-8 overall and 19-2 in the RMAC, stretching their lead to four games.

The two teams will resume the series tomorrow at noon with a doubleheader.
