GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 8 Colorado Mesa baseball team split a doubleheader with Colorado Mines on Saturday, ending their 22-game winning streak.
In game one, Colorado Mesa fell to the Orediggers 7-5 ending their long winning streak.
Colorado Mines scored in the first inning on an error and followed that up with a three-run homer in the third to take a 4-1 lead.
The Mavericks clawed back and evened the game in the fourth inning on a two-run double by
Andrew Contreras followed by a RBI single by
Kevan Elcock.
Colorado Mines outscored CMU 4-1 in the final innings of the game.
Elcock,
Kyle Serrano and
Bligh Madris all finished with two hits.
JR McDermott took the loss dropping his record to 6-1. McDermott allowed six runs (four earned) on five hits, walked three and struck out four in four and a third innings of work.
In game two,
Tanner Rempel's cycle lifted the Mavericks to a 13-4 win over Mines.
Rempel hit a two-run triple in the second, a single through the right side in the fourth, a two-run homer in the fifth, and a RBI double in the sixth.
The Abbottsford, B.C. native was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and five runs driven in.
It is the second cycle of the season for the Mavericks as
Bligh Madris hit for the cycle on March 10 against UCCS.
The Mavericks 7-8-9 hitters supplied much of the offense in the game. The trio combined to go 10-for-12 with eight runs scored and 11 runs driven in.
Zach McLeod was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs while
Will Dixon was 4-for-4 with four runs scored.
Chris Ramirez earned the win on the mound. Ramirez (7-1) went five innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits, walked none and struck out five.
Colorado Mesa is now 36-9 on the season and 28-3 in conference play.
The two teams will conclude their series tomorrow with a single game beginning at 12pm.
