GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – A crowd of 4,022 witnessed the No. 8 Colorado Mesa baseball team extend their win streak to 22 games after a 705 win over the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers on Friday evening at Suplizio Field.
The Orediggers took the lead in the top of the third inning after scoring a pair of runs on an error to take the 2-0 lead.
Colorado Mesa answered back in the bottom half of the inning after a
PJ Gonzalez two-run blast. It was his second home run of the season and knotted the game at 2-2.
The Mavericks took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Lane LaCrone singled up the middle, scoring
Andrew Contreras on the play to take the 3-2 lead.
The Mavs would tack on one run in the bottom of the fifth on a throwing error to make it 4-2.
Colorado School of Mines would tie it in the top of the seventh on a two-run double by Connor Lambert and evened the score at 4-4.
Once again it would be a short-lived lead as Colorado Mesa answered in the bottom of the seventh inning. Contreras single up the middle scoring
Kyle Serrano followed by a two-run bomb by
Kevan Elcock for the 7-4 lead. It was Elcock's first homer of the season.
Mines added one in the ninth but could not overcome the deficit.
Contreras finished the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI while
PJ Gonzalez finished 2-for-5 with a run scored and two runs driven in.
Serrano added his 16
th double of the season.
Jett Wodiuk picked up the win and moved his record to 2-0. Wodiuk record only two outs in the win but they may have been the two biggest outs of the evening.
With runners at second and third and one out, Wodiuk got a strikeout and induced a ground ball to
JJ Carr at third base for the inning ending out.
Tyler Day picked up his second save, striking out three in his two innings of work.
The Mavericks are now 35-8 on the season and 27-2 in the conference.
The two teams will continue the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1pm.
