ALAMOSA, Colo. – The No. 11 Colorado Mesa baseball team claimed their 23
rd overall and sixth straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season championship with the doubleheader sweep of Adams State on Saturday afternoon at ASU Baseball Field.
The sweep paired with a loss by Regis today gave the Mavericks the championship and the right to host the conference tournament.
In game one, a pair of big innings gave the Mavericks all the offense they would need in a 10-1 win over the Grizzlies.
Colorado Mesa scored three runs in the second inning thanks in part to a
Lane LaCrone RBI double and a two-run single by
PJ Gonzalez. They totaled four hits in the inning and left just one on.
The Mavericks exploded for five runs in the fourth inning on just five hits.
Keenan Eaton hit the first of his two home runs in the game to lead the inning off.
Kyle Serrano hit an RBI single through the right side followed by a three-run bomb by
Bligh Madris.
Madris finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored and four runs driven. His home run was the tenth of the season.
Eaton's second home run of the game came in the top half of the fifth inning. The junior finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two runs driven in. The two home runs give him three on the season.
That was plenty of run support for starter
Chris Ramirez. Ramirez (6-1) pitched five innings and allowed one run on five hits, walked one and struck out two.
Trevin Reynolds pitched the final two innings and allowed just two hits.
In game two of the double-dip, the Mavericks scored seven of their eight runs in the fourth inning in an 8-1 win over Adams State.
Bligh Madris led off the inning with his second home run of the day. Later in the inning,
Tanner Rempel hit a two-run single followed by a
PJ Gonzalez two-run single.
Gonzalez finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored while Madris' lone hit was the home run, his 11
th of the season.
Tanner Rempel went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three driven in. Rempel hit his first home run of the season in the top of the fifth.
JR McDermott earned the win on the mound to improve to 6-0 this season. McDermott went five innings and allowed one run on three hits, walked two and struck out eight.
Jett Wodiuk and
Tyler Day combined to pitch the final two innings of perfect baseball. Day struck out two in his inning of work.
The Maverick moved their winning streak to 20 games and improved their record to 33-8 on the season and 25-2 in the RMAC.
Colorado Mesa and Adams State will close out the series tomorrow with a single nine inning game beginning at 12pm.
