Mavericks Win Streak Grows to Nine

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa completed the four-game sweep of New Mexico Highlands on Sunday afternoon with an 8-1 win at Suplizio Field and moved their season long win streak to nine games.

The Mavericks scored in the bottom of the first on a sac fly by Kyle Serrano that scored PJ Gonzalez from third base to make the score 1-0.

Highlands knotted the game at 1-1 in the third on a RBI single by Brian Chaparro. That would be the only run the Cowboys would score in the game.

Bligh Madris belted his team-leading eighth homerun of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning, a solo shot to right field to make it 2-1 in favor of the Mavericks.

Colorado Mesa opened it up in the fifth inning where they would score five runs on five hits. JJ Carr highlighted the inning with a hit-and-run triple down the right field line that scored Gonzalez who was running on the play.

Zach McLeod would add the final run in the bottom of the seventh on a RBI single to center field. McLeod finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Andrew Contreras finished the game 3-for-3 with two runs scored.

Senior Tyler Day earned the win allowing one run on seven hits, walked two and struck out eight in five innings of work. Day (3-2) finished the weekend with two appearances and 11 total strikeouts.

Colorado Mesa improves to 22-8 and 14-2 in the conference.

The Mavericks will continue their 12-game home stand next weekend with RMAC pods. They will host Colorado Mines and Colorado Christian to Suplizio Field.
