Mavericks Head to Colorado Springs

LAST WEEKEND
Colorado Mesa swept the four-game series from Colorado Christian over the weekend. They outscored the Cougars 53-5 in the series and outhit them 56-27, with a 23-4 extra base-hit edge. The Mavericks finished the weekend with a .409 batting average and a 1.41 ERA on the mound.

SCOUTING THE MOUNTAIN LIONS
UCCS opened the RMAC schedule with a 3-1 series win over Regis in Denver. Zach Hall leads the Mountain Lions with a .373 batting average and a club best four home runs and 10 RBIs. Sophomore Colin Cicere has the best numbers of any starting pitcher the Mountain Lions have with a 3.66 ERA. Will Fenton leads the team with 18 strikeouts as UCCS' number three starter.

EVERYDAY
And then there was one. Junior shortstop Zach McLeod is the lone Maverick to play in and start every single game for the Mavericks. Senior catcher Kyle Serrano got his first game off in Saturday's game three of the series.

WE'RE GOING STREAKING
Redshirt sophomore Bligh Madris extended his hitting streak to 16 games that dates back to the game where he suffered his hand injury in 2016. The super utility player has a team best .476 batting average with 30 hits both lead the RMAC. He also has a team best eight doubles and 15 RBIs.

SIBLING RIVALRY
Colorado Mesa's JR McDermott will square off against his younger brother in the weekend series with UCCS. Matt McDermott is a freshman shortstop for the Mountain Lions.

BALLIN' OUT
Junior Garrett Ball had quite possibly the best success over a series in his college career. Ball batted .500 with nine runs driven in against CCU. He is batting .444 on the season in four starts.

TWO-OUT NIGHTMARE
Colorado Mesa has done damage this season with two outs. They have recorded a total of 119 RBIs on the year with 63 of those coming with two outs. Their opponents have recorded just 33 two-out RBIs.

NATIONAL RANKINGS
The Mavericks moved up from No. 24 to No. 17 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper coaches poll while they maintained in both the Perfect Game poll (No. 8) and moved slightly up in the D2BaseballNews.com poll (No. 7). They remain in the receiving votes section of the NCBWA National Poll.

THREE BAGGERS
Colorado Mesa leads the RMAC and ranks third in NCAA Division II with 12 triples this season. Madris, Ball, and PJ Gonzalez each have three triples this season.

ALUMNI UPDATE
2015 Colorado Mesa Maverick Sergio Romo recently signed a one-year, three million dollar deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Romo spent the first nine seasons of his big league career with the San Francisco Giants and was recently named to the World Baseball Classic roster for Team Mexico, his second WBC appearance.

ON DECK
Colorado Mesa will be on their conference bye week but will head out to Southern California for a Monday doubleheader with West Region power Point Loma Nazarene. Carroll B. Land Stadium was voted the most scenic ballpark by Baseball America.
