GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Sophomore ace
Kyle Leahy struck out a career-high 15 batters in a 6-0 win for Colorado Mesa over New Mexico Highlands on a rainy Friday evening at Suplizio Field.
The Erie native struck out six through three innings of play before an hour and four-minute lightning delay halted the game at 0-0.
Leahy followed that with nine more strikeouts in the next five innings of work but it wasn't without trouble. His lone inning of trouble was his last where two runners reached but he was able to punch out the final batter he faced to retire the side.
He allowed four hits and walked two in his eight innings of work.
Tyler Day came in and pitched a perfect ninth, striking out all three batters on 11 total pitches.
Lane LaCrone got the Mavericks on the board first in the fifth inning on an RBI single that scored
Garrett Ball from third to make it 1-0.
LaCrone also drove in two in the eighth to provide the Mavericks some insurance, scoring
Josh Shapiro and
PJ Gonzalez.
The Mavericks received even more insurance on two big swings.
Shortstop
Zach McLeod hit a line shot, two-run homer to push the Maverick lead to 5-0. McLeod finished 2-for-3.
Two batters later,
Kyle Serrano smoked a solo shot down the left field line to give Colorado Mesa the 6-0 cushion. Serrano finished 2-for-4.
The win stretches the Maverick win streak to six games and improves their record to 19-8 on the season and 11-2 in the RMAC.
The two teams will continue their series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1pm.
