GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – No. 25 Colorado Mesa completed the series sweep of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rival CSU-Pueblo on Sunday with a 6-2 win at Suplizio Field.
The Mavericks got on the board early with a two-run homer by
Kyle Serrano in the bottom half of the first inning. The homerun was Serrano's fifth of the season and third of the weekend.
CSU-Pueblo cut into the lead in the fifth inning on a RBI single by Tanner Fuhrman to make it 2-1 in favor of CMU.
Colorado Mesa gained back that run and then some in the sixth inning after a two-run homer by
Bligh Madris that cleared the first row of cars in the right field parking lot. The home run was his sixth of the season and second of the series.
Shortstop
Zach McLeod gave the Mavericks some insurance in the sixth inning with a two-run single that moved the Maverick lead to 6-1.
The ThunderWolves would get one back in the seventh but that was all the closer they would get.
Serrano, Madris, and
Trevin Reynolds all finished with two hits in the game.
Tyler Day earned the win pitching six innings of one-run baseball. Day (2-2) allowed one run on four hits, walked one and struck out six.
Five relievers combined to throw the final three innings of the game. They allowed one run on four hits, walked two and struck out four.
The Mavericks improved to 18-8 on the season and moved back into the top spot in the conference with a 10-2 record while CSU-Pueblo falls to 13-17 on the year, 7-9 in the RMAC.
Colorado Mesa will be back at home next weekend as they host New Mexico Highlands.
