GRAND JUNCTION, COLO. – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team led from start to finish in a 68-58 win over Westminster Saturday (Feb. 4).
The Mavericks opened the game on an 8-0 run and held the Griffins scoreless for over 4:30 until Aubrie Vale made a lay-up.
Mesa shot a game-high 47-percent (8-17) in the first quarter to lead 22-13.
Westminster's defense clamped down in the second quarter holding Mesa to 28-percent (4-14) from the field. WC out-scored CMU 14-10 in the second but trailed 32-27 at the half.
The Maverick offense continued to sputter in the second half shooting 6-24 (25-percent) from the field compared to 12-30 (40-percent) for the Griffins.
CMU relied heavily on free throws shooting 21-25 (84-percent) from the line over the final 20 minutes and 26-32 (81-percent) for the game.
WC finished the night 7-13 from the line.
Ma'ata Epenisa led the Mavericks with 14 points, and
Erin Reichle chipped in 13.
Nicole Archambeau finished with a double-double (10 points, 11 rebounds), and
Bryanna Adams contributed 11 points.
Sydnee Taylor led Westminster with a game-high 23 points.
Colorado Mesa (16-5, 13-4) will play at Adams State Feb. 10.
