ST. GEORGE, Utah – Colorado Mesa survived a bottom of the ninth rally by Dixie State and held onto the 7-6 win on Sunday afternoon at Bruce Hurst Field.
Dixie State drew a pair of walks to start off the bottom of the ninth inning and Colorado Mesa countered by bringing in
Bligh Madris from right field to pitch.
Madris threw a wild pitch to put runners at second and third followed by an intentional walk to load the bases.
The Las Vegas, Nev. native struck out the next two batters and induced a foul out to catcher
Kyle Serrano for the series clinching out.
Colorado Mesa opened the game with a 4-0 lead but Dixie State fought back scoring two runs in the fourth and fifth innings before taking their first lead of the game by scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth at 6-5.
The Mavericks reclaimed the lead after Madris hit a go-ahead two-run double in the top of the eighth inning.
Madris' day ended at 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two doubles at the plate and one inning pitched with one walk, two strikeouts and a save on the mound.
Matt Haggerty went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, two runs driven in and a home run in his first start as a Maverick.
Colorado Mesa used seven pitchers in the win with
Brick Paskiewicz earning the decision.
The Mavericks will host Montana State – Billings next weekend in the home opener as part of Leadoff Weekend presented by The Courtyard by Marriott.
