ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Mavericks and Trailblazers fought the rain and the tarp early in the day but when the tarp was pulled for the final time the Mavericks put on a hitting display in a 13-2 win over No. 15 Dixie State in a single game at Bruce Hurst Field.
The Mavericks put two on the board in the first inning after a 47-minute rain delay.
Kyle Serrano had an RBI single scoring
Tanner Nieslanik followed by a
PJ Gonzalez RBI double that scored Serrano.
After single runs in the third and fifth innings, Colorado Mesa scored six runs in the sixth inning on five hits and left two on.
Andrew Contreras,
PJ Gonzalez, and
Josh Shapiro all had RBIs in the inning.
The Mavericks added three insurance runs in the ninth-inning to secure the win.
Serrano led the Maverick barrage with four-hits while Gonzalez drove in four.
Lefty
Chris Ramirez made his Colorado Mesa debut and didn't disappoint. Ramirez made it through his scheduled five innings of work and allowed one run on four hits, walked two and struck out four to earn the win.
Sophomore
Kyle Leahy picked up the rule-book save finishing the final four inning of the game, allowing one unearned run on four hits, walked two and struck out one.
The Mavericks and Trailblazers close out the four-game series tomorrow at noon with a single nine-inning game.
