ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team rebounded from their first loss of the season with a convincing 83-45 win over Adams State on Saturday evening in Plachy Hall, concluding their first conference road trip of the season.
Junior
Jaylyn Duran continued to give the Grizzlies problems, led the way with a game-high 23 points. Duran set career-highs in three of the four games she has played against Adams State going for 25 a year ago in Brownson Arena.
Colorado Mesa shot a season-high 58.5 percent (31-of-53) from the field including 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from beyond the three-point arc. The Mavericks limited Adams State to just 28.3 percent from the field and one made three-point basket.
The Mavericks opened the game with a 20-6 lead after the first quarter but the Grizzlies didn't go away answering with a 21-19 second quarter and headed into the break trailing 39-27 but had momentum.
Duran and the Mavericks thwarted that momentum with a 24-11 third quarter and an 11-0 run in the quarter.
Colorado Mesa won the rebounding battle 37-33 but allowed 20 offensive rebounds to the Grizzlies which led to 19 second chance points.
Kelli Van Tassel finished with 15 points and
Ma'ata Epenisa had 12 to round out the Mavericks in double-digits.
Erin Reichle finished with eight assists and
Sydni Brandon continued to stuff the stat sheet with two points, two steals, four rebounds and five assists.
Grizzly Leila Hadzialijagic led Adams State with 10 points and five rebounds.
The Mavericks improved to 9-1 on the season and 3-1 in the conference while Adams State falls to 2-4, 1-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Colorado Mesa will return home next weekend to take on the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves and the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls. These will be the final games before the two week winter break.
