GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball overcame deficits all night but couldn't overcome the final one in a 67-60 loss to the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves on Friday evening in Brownson Arena.
The Mavericks trailed by 13 at 16-3 with 1:56 to play in the first quarter, but eventually took the lead at 46-45 with 16 seconds to play in the third quarter. Colorado Mesa never led in the fourth quarter.
CSU-Pueblo had a size advantage and showed in the final rebounding numbers, leading 40-37. The Mavericks, however, owned a 16-11 advantage on the offensive glass. The 16 offensive rebounds was a season-high.
Colorado Mesa shot just 14.3 percent (2-for-14) from the field in the first quarter, finishing with just eight points. They finished at 33 percent (20-for-60) from the field and the same from beyond the three-point line.
Jaylyn Duran led the Mavericks with a game-high 20 points and shot 70 percent from the field. She added three rebounds and an assist.
Erin Reichle added 18 points, three rebounds and three assists while
Ma'ata Epenisa led the Mavericks with seven rebounds.
CSU-Pueblo's Katie Cunningham finished just a point and two assists shy of a triple double, finishing with nine points, 12 rebounds, and eight assists.
The Mavericks drop to 9-2 on the season and 4-2 in the conference while CSU-Pueblo improves to 7-4 on the year and 5-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Colorado Mesa will take on New Mexico Highlands tomorrow night at 5:30pm in the final game before the two week winter break.
