RMAC Tournament Preview

After the Skyhawks took care of business on Tuesday with a 3-0 win over Regis, they will be traveling to Golden to take on Colorado Mesa University in the second round of the RMAC tournament. The winner of the matchup will advance to the RMAC championship on Sunday.

In the lone regular season between these two teams, the Mavericks and Skyhawks tied 1-1. FLC scored first in the 74th minute thanks to a Jatta Salifu penalty kick. Four minutes later the Mavericks were able to score a penalty kick of their own, courtesy of Moshe Perez. Both offices had plenty of opportunities to score more than once in the contest. CMU finished with 14 shots and six of them came on goal. FLC was not far behind with 11 total shots and five on goal.

If the Mavericks advance to the RMAC Championship, it would be the third season in a row and the fourth time in five years. CMU is looking to match Colorado School of Mines (CSM) with three RMAC Tournament Championships over the last six seasons. A win would also give the Mavericks back to back tournament championships, which hasn't happened in school history.

CMU would be taking on the winner of MSU Denver and No. 9 CSM in the championship game if they advance that far.

Earlier in the season the Mavericks defeated the Roadrunners in two regular season matchups, both in shutout fashion. This included a 5-0 onslaught in the final regular season game of the season on the road down in Denver. CMU defeated the Roadrunners in the second round of the RMAC tournament as well last season. The game was sent to a shootout where Perez finished it for the Mavericks to give them the victory.

However, CSM was one of the Mavericks two loses on the season. In the first conference game of the year the Orediggers came to Grand Junction and defeated the Mavericks 2-1 at Walker Field. RMAC player of the year John Haist scored the first goal of the game in the 51st minute before Benji Delgadillo answered for the Mavericks a minute later. The game looked to be going into overtime before a Jason Zobott goal in the 89th minute stunned the Mavericks. It was nearly a shot for shot game from both teams, with the difference only being one shot a part. CMU finished with 12 and six on goal while the Orediggers finished the game with 11 and five on target.

The last time CMU and CSM met in the RMAC Tournament was back in 2015, which was also a game down in Golden, as well as the RMAC Championship. In that game the Mavericks struck fast early thanks to a Roy Abergil goal in the sixth minute. However, CSM would respond in the second half with two goals to get the 2-1 victory over the Mavericks and claim the RMAC Tournament trophy.

The matchup between CMU and FLC is set to start at 7 p.m. on Friday, and the championship match will be held on Sunday with a 1 p.m. kick off.
