Three Point Shooting Boosts Mavericks to First Win

Men's basketball was looking for their first win of the season as they traveled to Gunnison, Colo. to participate in the Western State Tournament. Their first opponent was Midwestern State University on Friday night. And the Mavericks came out with a dominant 90-78 victory for their first win of the year.

It was a close game in the first half. CMU went into the locker room with a 38-36 lead.

In the second half, the Mavericks took over. CMU was up 47-45 and then proceeded to go on a 14-4 run to get a 61-49 lead with just under 15 minutes to play. CMU rolled for the remainder of the half to their 12 point victory.

Three-point shooting came up huge for the Mavericks in the contest. The team knocked down 13 long-range jumpers on 24 attempts. That was good for a 54.2 percentage on the night.

Along with their play from the outside, the Mavericks dominated in the paint. CMU outscored the mustangs 32-24 down by the basket.

Defensively the Mavericks were physical with the Mustangs all night long. They held them to a mere 38 percent shooting from the field. This also included MSU finishing 8-28 from the three-point line. That equals out to a below average 28.6 percent.

Four Mavericks finished in double figures led by Damon Dubots with 21 on 9-13 shooting from the field. Connor Nichols wasn't far behind with 18 and Emilio Acedo finished with 16. Acedo played a huge role from behind the arc going 4-9 from the three-point line.

CMU's bench was in a grove in the win, finishing with 22 points on the night. They were led by Kolton Peterson with 17 points who buried five three-pointers in the game.

Next up for the Mavericks is Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University on Saturday. Tip-off between the Eagles and Mavericks is set for 5 p.m.
