It was the battle versus the No. 8 team in the nation: Colorado School of Mines. And Sunday afternoon they showed why they are one of the top teams in the nation, as they defeated the Mavericks 3-1.
There was only one goal scored in the first half as Acacia Ortiz was able to take a rebounded shot off of
Emily Signorio and fired it into the back of the net. CSM went into halftime with the 1-0 lead. In the second half the Orediggers would score two more times in the 52nd and 63rd minutes. Nicole LaTourette scored the first off of a 30 yard launch to the top corner of the goal. The second was from Jennifer Kendall off of a free kick from Emily Garnier. CMU was finally able to score in the 77th minute off of a free kick from
Hannah Naftanel for her first goal of the season.
CMU had a rough time offensively through most of the game. They were held without a shot attempt through the first half of play. In the second half CMU was able to get off eight shots, six of which came on goal. The Orediggers however compiled 19 shots on the day, with six coming on goal.
Signorio was in net for the Mavericks and she finished the game with three saves, but received the loss. As for the Orediggers it was Shannon Mooney in net and she recorded five saves and the victory.
The loss moves the Mavericks to 6-6-0 on the season and 3-4-0 in the conference. CMU's next test will be on Friday against Fort Lewis College.
