PUEBLO, Colo.— Outside hitters
MacKenzie Edwards and
Katie Scherr combined for 29 kills as each had a double-double while
Natalee Todd put down another 14 kills to lead the Colorado Mesa University volleyball team to a hard-fought 4-set (20-25, 25-18, 29-27, 25-22) Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference away win over Colorado State University-Pueblo, Friday night in Massari Arena.
Â
The Mavericks, now a perfect 3-0 in true away matches, improved to 11-4 overall and to 5-2 in the RMAC while the ThunderWolves remain winless at home while falling to 2-13 (1-4 RMAC) overall.
Â
Edwards, the reigning RMAC Offensive Player of the Week led all players with 15 kills and added 14 digs. Scherr registered 14 kills and 16 digs to record her third straight double-double.
Â
Sophomore setter
Samantha Ritter also had a double-double with 53 assists and 17 digs while junior libero
Taylor Woods tallied 22 digs.
Â
The Mavericks also received nine kills and three blocks from
Megan Gianinetti and another seven kills and a pair of blocks from
Alyssa Chutka as they finished with a 63-49 edge in total kills. However, the Mavericks were also guilty of 31 hitting errors, 12 of the result of ThunderWolf blocks, and were slightly out-hit .189 to .179 throughout the match.
Â
CSU-Pueblo's Caitlin Broadwell tallied 12 kills while PuaLehua Keola tallied 31 digs in the ThunderWolves' losing effort.
Â
After dropping the first set, the Mavericks used a 7-2 spurt in the second to break open a 12-all deadlock. Gianinetti and Scherr each had two kills in that stretch, which proved decisive.
Â
The third set was tight throughout and was tied at 23 before a Gianinetti-Chutka block gave the Mavericks their first set point at 24-23.  However, the Pack would win the next two points to earn a set-point of their own, which was stopped by a Scherr kill that tied the set at 25.
Â
The teams would then exchange the next four points as the Mavericks fought off yet another set point.
With the set tied at 26,
Reed Jacobson served one of CMU's four aces before a CSU-Pueblo block tied the score at 27. However, the Pack would commit back-to-back miscues as the Mavericks pulled out the set to take a 2-1 overall lead.
Â
The Mavericks would then use a 10-4 run to build a 10-6 lead early in the fourth set and never looked back trading points regularly throughout the rest of the match.
Â
The Mavericks continue what is their longest RMAC trip of the season on Saturday when they face New Mexico Highlands in Las Vegas, N.M. at 6 o'clock. The Cowgirls won in four sets at home against Western State Colorado on Friday and are now 5-7 overall and 2-5 in RMAC matches.
