The task was simple for Colorado Mesa University's women's soccer team. Win on Saturday against Black Hills State (1-14) and you are guaranteed a spot in the RMAC playoffs. And the Mavericks took care of business winning the game 5-0 and clinching a berth for the postseason.
CMU got the sixth seed in the playoffs with the victory. The Mavericks will be facing off against UCCS, the third seed in the conference, on Tuesday down in Colorado Springs. In the team's lone matchup of the season the Mavericks went on the road and won in Colorado Springs 1-0.
The game on Saturday was close in the first half with only one scoring coming from either team.
Madison Jones scored on a header off a corner kick from
Alexis Allard in the 27th minute to give CMU the 1-0 halftime lead.
In the second half the Mavericks exploded for four goals, all of which came in a time span of 12 minutes. First was Jones' second of the game off another corner kick in the 58th minute. Next Allard got her sixth goal of the year four minutes later from a shot 30 yards outside of the box that went high over the keeper.
Leily Ghods got in on the action with her first goal of the season in the 67th minute off an assist from
Zoe Peterson. CMU closed the game out in the 70th minute with the longest shot of the day courtesy of
Jocelyn Ceccarelli. Ceccarelli shot it from 40 yards outside the box to seal the 5-0 victory over the Yellow Jackets.
Jessica Jolley was in net for the Mavericks, and she finished the game with seven saves on the day. It was also Jolley's fifth win and third clean sheet of the season.
CMU finishes the regular season with an 8-8-1 record including a 5-6-1 conference record.
