Colorado Mesa University's women's soccer team was hoping to keep their season alive on Tuesday night as they traveled to Colorado Springs to take on UCCS in the first round of the RMAC tournament. After defeating the Mountain Lions in the first meeting earlier this season, the Mavericks were hoping to be able to pull off the upset victory. However, UCCS remembered that loss and came out firing, defeating the Mavericks 4-0.
The Mountain Lions scored their first two goals in a time span of 20 seconds in the first half. At the 14 minute mark Savannah Boarman scored off of a corner kick set piece from Anna Gregg to get the scoring going. Then at the 14:20 mark it was a goal by Chanisse Hendrix on a through ball down the left side that gave UCCSÂ a two goal cushion. The team took that cushion into halftime.
In the second half the Mavericks were once again unable to get on the board, and allowed the Mountain Lions to put up two more in the 56th and 83rd minutes.
CMU had their opportunities, putting up 14 shots with eight of them coming on goal. However, the team was just unable to finish any of those opportunities.
Alexis Allard and
Amanda Wenzel combined for 11 of the total shots and seven of the eight shots on goal.
In goal for the Mavericks was
Jessica Jolley. She finished the game allowing four goals and collected six saves.
The loss ends the Mavericks season. The team finished with an 8-9-1 overall record and a 5-6-1 conference record.
