GUNNISON, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University Mavericks claimed their third 3-set sweep of the last five days as they dominated rival Western State Colorado University in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference volleyball action on Tuesday night here in the Mountaineers' Paul Wright Gymnasium.
Â
The Mavericks out-hit the Mountaineers .322 to .137 in the 25-17, 25-13, 25-18 victory and needed just one hour and 17 minutes to improve to 15-6 overall and to 9-4 in RMAC play. The Mountaineers fell to 2-20 overall and to 1-12 in conference action.
Â
Maverick outside hitters
MacKenzie Edwards and
Katie Scherr led the way with 10 kills each.   Meanwhile,
Alyssa Chutka hit an errorless .800 with eight kills on just 10 swings. Edwards, named as the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, also had a team-high 10 digs and hit .450 notching her ninth double-double of the campaign.
Â
Chutka was involved in three of the Mavericks' six blocks.Â
Â
CMU also recorded seven service aces and allowed just one while taking advantage of eight Mountaineer service aces in the complete victory, which is the tenth straight in the series dating back to 2013.
Â
The Mavericks finished with 39 kills, 30 of which were assisted by sophomore setter
Samantha Ritter.
Â
Meanwhile, junior libero
Taylor Woods tallied three service aces but saw a streak of 32 consecutive matches with 10 or more digs come to an end. She finished Tuesday's match with eight although the Mavericks still had a 40-33 advantage in that category while also capitalizing on 11 unforced Mountaineer hitting errors and 17 overall.
Â
The teams split the first six points of the match and were tied at 1, 2 and 3. There would not be any more ties for the rest of the night as the Mavericks went on 4-0 and 3-0 runs with Edwards at the service line to build their first set lead to as many nine points en-route to the 8-point opening set win.
Â
Hitting at an impressive .560 clip as a team in the opening set, the Mavericks continued their domination in the second jumping out to a large 12-3 lead before cruising to a 2-set lead at the intermission. The Mavericks out-hit Western .360 to .029 in the second set as the Mountaineers were guilty of eight hitting errors.
Â
The third set was the closest of the match although Woods served the Mavericks to a 3-0 lead and was at the service line for four straight points mid-way through the final set, ended by a Scherr service ace.
Â
The Mavericks will now return home to face Westminster College, currently 6-15 (3-10 RMAC) on Saturday at 7 p.m. while the Mountaineers will face that same Griffin squad on Thursday.
