Colorado Mesa University's women's team was ready to celebrate their seniors on Sunday afternoon in a big way. The Mavericks rocketed themselves to a 7-1 victory over New Mexico Highlands on senior day at Walker Field.
CMU opened up the day celebrating their three seniors:
Amanda Wenzel,
Haley Glassy and
Halie Bergeron. All three walked out prior to the announcement of starting lineups and were met with their jerseys from the team.
In the first half it was a close affair between the Mavericks and the Cowboys. NMHU struck first in the 20th minute thanks to a free kick from just outside the box. CMU was able to respond and tie the game up at 1-1 in the 37th minute.
Zoe Peterson recieved a cross from
Mackenzie King in the center of the box and Peterson was able to net her third goal of the year. The teams went into halftime tied 1-1.
In the second half the Mavericks would explode for six unanswered goals. First was senior Bergeron in the 48th minute on a penalty kick to give the Mavericks the 2-1 lead.
Alexis Allard would score the next two for CMU to move her season total up to five and the game total to four. Peterson would score her second one of the day in the 61st minute off a pass from
Emma Musson to give the Mavericks the commanding 5-1 lead.
Brecken Dalley would add another for the Mavericks in the 72nd minute. Wenzel put a bow on the game by scoring a free kick from 30 yards out to highlight senior day and the 7-1 victory.
The Mavericks outshot the Cowboys 24-10 and 10-6 in shots on goal.
Jessica Jolley was in net for the Mavericks and she got the win coming away with five saves on the day.
CMU moves to 7-8-1 on the year and 4-6-1 in the RMAC. The Mavericks final regular season game is on Sunday on the road at Black Hills State. Kick off is set for 11 a.m.
