Sunday's men's soccer matchup featured the number two and three teams in the RMAC. Colorado Mesa University squared off against Metro State at Walker Field, and it was the Maverick's defense that pushed CMU to a 1-0 victory.
The lone goal of the match came in the 39th minute courtesy of Matt Miller scoring his fourth of the season.
Kevin Del Mazo fired in a shot on Roadrunner keeper Tucker Schneider. Schneider was able to dive for the save but he directed the ball straight to Miller who fired it in for the score.
Then the Mavericks defense took over. Metro had 14 shots on the day, but the CMU defense only allowed one of those to come one goal. Huge stops at the end of the second half when the Roadrunners were looking for any glimmer of hope were key in the Maverick's victory.
The game was a physical affair between the two teams with 10 fouls being called on both teams. There were also a total of eight yellow cards handed out on the afternoon, with seven of those coming against the Mavericks.
Briley Guarneri got his 13th win of the season and his eighth clean sheet of the year with the victory. He had one save on the day.
CMU now moves to 13-2-1 on the year and 9-2-1 in the RMAC. These two teams will meet one more time before the end of the regular season. They will play next Sunday down in Denver. Prior to that matchup, the Mavericks have a meeting with Colorado Christian once again on Friday.Â
