The last time the Griffins and the Mavericks met it took a goal by
Moshe Perez in overtime to seal the victory for Colorado Mesa. This time, the Mavericks made sure the game was going to be finished in regulation. And they put an exclamation point on the win scoring a season high six goals to win 6-0 on Wednesday night.
It took 49 seconds for the Mavericks to get on the score board. Perez received a pass from
Slater Elkind down the right side and Perez was able to beat his defender to score his seventh of the season. Then it was
Kevin Del Mazo's turn. After not having a point last weekend, Del Mazo made sure he wasn't going to be held off the score sheet in this one. In the 2nd minute Del Mazo took a rebound off the Griffins keeper and put it in the back of the net to give the Mavericks the early 2-0 lead. They took that lead to the half.
The second half was dominated once again by CMU. Del Mazo would score three minutes into the half for his second of the night and sixth of the season. Then
Malik Mennana got in on the action in the 61st minute. Mennana slipped through the middle of the defense in the box and received a pin point pass from Perez to score his fifth of the season. Niall Saffery would score his first of the season two minutes later to push the lead to 5-0. Then the icing on the cake came in the final minute of action when
Ken Dizon came off the bench and scored his first goal of his career off a pass from
Taka Kosins.
CMU dominated every category in the contest. They finished with 20 shots to the Griffins eight. CMU racked up 13 shots on goal while the Griffins could only muster up four on the night.
Briley Guarneri got his 10th win of the season and his seventh clean sheet in the victory. He finished with four saves to bring his season total up to 33.
With the win the Mavericks move to 10-2-1 on the year and 6-2-1 in the conference. Next up for the Mavericks is South Dakota Mines on Friday for the second contest between the teams. Kick off is set for 1 p.m.
