Colorado Mesa University was looking for their fourth win in five games as they were taking on South Dakota Mines on Sunday. The Mavericks were able to do just that with a 3-1 victory over the Hardrockers.
The Mavericks were first to strike in the 21st minute with a
Trentin Atkin header off of a
Kevin Del Mazo corner kick. SDM however would score in the 42nd minute to tie the game up at 1-1 entering halftime. In the second half, it was all Mavericks.
Matthew Miller scored the team's second goal in the 56th minute off of a
Moshe Perez assist. Then in the 76th minute, it was role reversal time. Perez received a pass from Miller to score his fifth goal of the season.
It was a physical matchup between the two teams. A total of 33 fouls were called (SDM 20, CMU 13) on the day. There were also six yellow cards handed out throughout the match.
CMU finished the game with 18 shots compared to the Hardrockers 6.
Briley Guarneri was in between the pipes for the Mavericks. He finished the game getting his eighth win of the season.
With the win the Mavericks move to 8-1-1 on the season and 4-1-1 in the conference. The Mavericks next matchup will be on Friday against CSU-Pueblo at Walker Field. KIck off is set for 7 p.m.
